Southern Miss wakes up in time to avoid sweep

MEMPHIS – Adam Doleac blasted a grand slam and B.A. Vollmuth added a two-run homer as No. 14 Southern Miss snapped a three game losing streak with Sunday’s 8-5 win over league rival Memphis.
The Golden Eagles (23-8 overall, 6-3 Conference USA) found themselves down 5-0 after two innings.
Memphis catcher Phillip Chapman (Northeast) hit a three-run home run in the first and UM added two runs in the second on an RBI double by Drew Martinez and a run scoring single from NCAA batting leader Chad Zurcher.
Southern Miss scored its first run in the sixth inning on a Mark Ellis single. Doleac tied the game at 5 with his one-out homer in the seventh and Vollmuth gave his team the lead for good in the eighth with his 10th homer of the season.
Dillon Day (1-0) threw the final five innings for the victory, giving up four hits and striking out four.
For Memphis (19-12, 3-3), Zurcher went 2 for 4 and is hitting .519 to lead the NCAA. Southern Miss ends an eight game road swing on Tuesday with a game at Pearl against Ole Miss. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
