• A proposed consolidation of the Ackerman and Weir high schools will require federal approval. The Choctaw County school board approved a consolidation proposal for the high schools earlier this week.
Ackerman would be home to the 9th-through-12th grades under the proposal. The school went 10-4 in football last fall, reaching the Class 2A quarterfinals. Weir competes in Class 1A.
• Former Tupelo High swimmer Hannah Wilson, a sophomore swimmer at Florida State, has been elected team captain for the 2012-13 season. The junior-to-be, an 18-time state champion in high school, competes in butterfly and freestyle events for the Lady Seminoles.
