MARIETTA – Blake Spruill rushed for 217 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries as the East Union Urchins rolled past the New Site Royals 59-22 to move to 6-0 on the season.

“Blake has really developed into our feature back,” said East Union coach Scott Duley. “He has a couple of big games for us this season. He seems to run with more and more confidence each game out and we are really going to need a lot more of that throughout division play.”

Spruill scored on runs of 58, 42, and 52 yards.

East Union (6-0, 1-0) had five rushing touchdowns of 40-plus yards.

Johnathan Valle intercepted New Site (2-4, 0-1) on the first play of the game and returned it to the 5-yard line to set up the first touchdown of the game on a 5-yard pass from D.J. Armstrong to Jacob Elder.

“I thought we played one of our best defensive games of the season,” said Duley. “We were able to set the tone early with the interception and I thought we played with a lot of intensity on that side of the ball.”

East Union turned three of five New Site turnovers into touchdowns.

J.T. Herring rushed for 131 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries as the Royals could only manage 180 yards of total offense, all rushing.

On playoff trail

East Union had 589 yards of total offense with Armstrong rushing for 86 yards and rushing touchdowns of 7 and 17 yards and Jamie McCullough also rushed for 86 yards and a 50-yard touchdown.

The win went a long way for the second-year program of advancing to their first-ever playoff appearance.

“That’s one of our goals this year, but it’s not our focus right now,” Duley said. “I know it sounds cliché, but are taking the season one week at a time. We are going to enjoy this win and start getting ready for next week on Saturday.”
