TCPS’ Brooks leads 1A

Tupelo Christian’s Parker Brooks shot a 6-under-66 on Wednesday to take the individual lead into today’s final round of the MHSAA Class 1A state golf tournament.
At Big Oaks Golf Club, Brooks had an 8-stroke lead over Sacred Heart individual golfer Hunter Hammett and a 10-stroke lead over St. Aloysius’ Gabe Riversos with 18 holes to play.
St. Aloysius leads the four-team field by a comfortable margin, 322-372 over second-place Stringer.
Ingomar finished the day in fourth place with a 407 total, led by a pair of 81s from Matt Hale and Chandler Thompson.
Tupelo Christian’s 375 total has the Eagles in third place.
Heath Davis shot an 88 for TCPS, Nate Hester 105, Garrett Scott 116 and Charlie Forrest 118.
The final round tees off this morning at 8 a.m.
Oxford shot a one-day 323 to take a 9-stroke lead over West Jones in the Class 5A state tournament at Ole Miss. Pearl River Central is in third place, a stroke back of West Jones. The Chargers were led by Ben Hubbard’s 78. He was followed by Ward Toler (80), Beau Ryals (81), Turner Arnold (84) and Ethan Holmes (88).
Starkville is eighth of the 12 teams in the tournament. Jace Hobart shot a team-high 85 for the Yellow Jackets. Cameron Maddox shot an 87, Braxton Jenkins 99, Brooks Jenkins 101 and Ethan Chastain 105.
St. Patrick (338) holds a 19-stroke lead over Forest (357) in the Class 3A state tournament at Lake Caroline in Madison.
Belmont (373) is a distant third.
Jesse Sunderman of St. Patrick shot a 77 and hold a one-shot lead over Zack Hammons of Raleigh.
Belmont’s Colin Harris (86) had the best effort among the area golfers in the field.
The Class 4A state golf tournament at Pass Christian was suspended by rain Wednesday after 12 holes.
Play is scheduled to resume today with the remainder of the first round, with the last 18 holes to follow.
