Tupelo’s Mike Thompson missed the cut at the U.S. Senior Amateur by a stroke after shooting his second consecutive round of 76 on Sunday at Beverly Country Club in Chicago.
The cut line for the 64-man match play field was at 151.
In his second round, Thompson tamed the par-4 No. 4 with a birdie, a day after a double bogey there. But he lost three strokes on his final two holes.
“Out there trying to finish up, I wish I’d known with about three holes left where the cut line was going to be,” Thompson said.
Having teed off at No. 10, Thompson’s last two drives found the rough. He two-putted at No. 8 for a bogey and had to escape a bunker on No. 9 for a costly double bogey.
“That’s golf,” said Thompson, 59, who qualified for the event in his third attempt.
“Just making the field is the big deal, getting through the qualifier,” he said. “It’ll be tough again next year with a new crop of 55-year-olds out there.”
The match play competition begins today.
