Tupelo could host part of state basketball tournament

Tupelo’s BancorpSouth Arena could become the new venue for the 1A and 2A state high school basketball tournaments, beginning in 2013, an official with the MHSAA said Wednesday.
The move to Northeast Mississippi is pending the passage of sweeping changes in the state tournament’s format by the state’s governing body of athletics and activities.
“The proposed changes have to be tweaked and approved by our executive board,” said Todd Kelly, the MHSAA’s director of development and communications.
One of the proposed changes would be to play eight-team, three-day tournaments in all classifications. The 3A through 6A state tournaments would continue to be played at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson. Another proposal is to play the girls and boys tournaments separate weeks.
