COLUMBUS – Tupelo, the state’s top-ranked team, scored 14 runs in the top of the eighth inning Tuesday to defeat Columbus 17-3 in a Division 2-6A game.
“We were a hit away from winning it in the seventh,” THS coach Gary Enis said. “We had the winning run at second base.”
Columbus, which needed a win to qualify for the postseason, scored three runs in the sixth to force extra innings.
Tupelo, ranked No. 9 nationally by ESPN, improved to 24-1 and 9-0 in division play. The Golden Wave, which has a 22-game win streak, will be a top seed in the state playoffs, starting April 29.
William Goss homered and had two triples to pace Tupelo at the plate.
Ben Hudspeth (8-1) was the winning pitcher. He also singled, double and tripled.
