Tupelo and Lafayette return to state volleyball postseason play today with semifinals matches.
In Class III, defending state champion Tupelo (32-5) hosts DeSoto Central (18-15) at 6 p.m. The Lady Wave defeated Clinton 3-0 in the quarterfinals while the Lady Jaguars beat Madison Central 3-0.
Tupelo defeated DeSoto Central 2-0 earlier this season in a tournament. The game scores were 25-23 and 25-22.
“DeSoto Central is the most fundamentally-sound team in Mississippi,” Tupelo coach Clint Jordan said. “They’re excellent servers, very good passers and extremely smart hitters.”
The THS-DC winner plays the south state winner at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mississippi College in Clinton for the state championship.
– Lafayette (16-6), a 3-0 winner against Ackerman in the quarterfinals, travels to Lewisburg (23-8) for its Class I semifinals match, which is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Lewisburg eliminated Madison St. Joseph with a 3-0 win in the quarterfinals. The DeSoto county team beat Lafayette twice this season, winning 3-0 in both matches.
The winner plays the south semifinals winner at 11 a.m. Saturday at MC for the state title.
