Tupelo returns to top of all-sports standings

Tupelo High School’s athletic program returned to the top of the Clarion-Ledger’s All-Sports Award for 2010-11 after two seasons behind Class 6A rival Madison Central.
Tupelo totaled 460.5 points in the competition, scoring points in 21 of 22 MHSAA sports. Madison Central (440.0) was second, Pearl (357.5) third and Oxford (356.5) fourth.
It’s the 17th time in 24 seasons for the Golden Wave to finish atop of the state all-sports standings.
They won five state titles during the past season – in boys and girls bowling, boys golf, boys swimming and girls cross country.
Tupelo was joined as a class champion by 5A Pearl, 4A New Albany, 3A St. Andrew’s, 2A Madison St. Joseph and 1A West Union.
The top three 4A teams were all from Northeast Mississippi – New Albany (305.5), Pontotoc (298.5) and Lafayette (234.0).
