Samford pitcher Lex Rutledge, a junior from Tupelo, was named a second-team preseason All-American this week by Baseball America.
The teams were selected by a vote of Major League Baseball scouting directors.
Rutledge will move back to the closer’ role for the Bulldogs this season after spending 2011 as a starter. As a freshman, he had a 5-1 record with 11 saves and a 1.71 ERA.
Last season, he went 5-6 with a 3.71 ERA in 17 appearances, including 12 starts, and led the team with 79 strikeouts.
Samford, 37-23 a year ago, opens its season Friday at home against Radford.
