Tupelo’s Rutledge signs with Baltimore Orioles

Tupelo product Lex Rutledge, a sixth-round draft pick earlier this month, signed on Wednesday with the Baltimore Orioles.
A junior lefthanded pitcher out of Samford, Rutledge reportedly signed for
$196,200.
Soon after he was drafted, Rutledge told the Daily Journal that he planned to sign and begin his pro career rather than return to college. “It’s been my dream and I’m ready to play,” he said at that time.
Baltimore bloggers said a week ago that the team had agreed to terms with Rutledge, but Rutledge himself tweeted this Wednesday morning: “Just signed my first professional contract! So happy and proud to be an Oriole!”
Rutledge visited Baltimore on Monday, underwent an extensive physical, then flew to the Orioles’ training facility at Sarasota, Fla. He’ll be evaluated there, then get his first minor league team assignment.
