Tupelo’s Chris Stratton, a first-round draft pick by the San Francisco Giants in 2012, was promoted to Double-A on Tuesday.
Regarded as one of the club’s top 10 prospects, he’ll join the Giants’ Eastern League team, the Richmond (Va.) Flying Squirrels.
Stratton, who rose to prominence at Mississippi State, has been pitching at Single-A San Jose this season, in the hitter-friendly California League.
He left San Jose on a high note, striking out all three batters he faced Sunday in an inning of relief – his first such appearance this season. He leaves with a 7-8 record in 18 starts with a 5.07 ERA, striking out 102 in 99 1/3 innings.
Stratton was the 20th overall pick in 2012.
