Tupelo’s West in the hunt at U.S. Junior Am tourney

Tupelo golfer Noah West shot a 5-over-par 77 Monday in the opening round of the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.
West finished the first day tied for 67th with 21 players.
William Starke of Chapin, S.C., and Beau Hossler of Mission Viejo, Calif., are tied for first place in the 156-player field with 4-underpar 68s.
The final round of stroke play is scheduled for the today. The low 64 scorers will advance to match play, which will determine the championship.
West, who will be a senior at Tupelo High this fall, is the state’s 2011 Class 6A high school state champion.
