TUPELO – There were two new winners at the 2011 King of the Hill Triathlon on Saturday at Tombigbee State Park.
Mark Newman, a 49-year-old from Collierville, Tenn., was the men’s winner, covering the course – a half-mile swim, 20-mile bike race and 3.6-mile run in 1:25:01. Runner-up Gary Zyriek, 40, from Cordova, Tenn., finished in 1:29:10.
Women’s winner Ashley Bradford, 35, of Germantown, Tenn., finished in 1:44:17, 30 seconds ahead of Alexis Faber.
Newman – a former Ironman World Championship qualifier and former Naval Academy swimmer – got off to a strong start with the best swim time (11:41) in the field.
Zyriek took the lead by finishing the bike leg about 21⁄2 minutes faster than Newman.
But Newman, a former St. Jude Marathon winner, led the field in the run (19:59), while Zyriek ran a 24:33.
“It was a great race today,” said organizer Mark Bresee. “Tupelo was well-represented, both on and off the course.”
