JACKSON, Tenn. – Blue Mountain College came up short here Thursday in its bid for a conference championship in only its second year of intercollegiate baseball.
Union University slipped past the Toppers 2-1 to claim the TranSouth Athletic Conference Championships at Fesmire Fields on the Union campus.
“We gave everything we had to give,” BMC coach Curt Fowler said. “We could not have played any harder. I couldn’t be any prouder of these guys than I am right now. Give Union all the credit because they’re a great ballclub and they played like it.”
Union first baseman made a diving stop on Nate Bell’s two out line-drive down the first base line with BMC runners on first and third to end the game.
BMC, which finished the season with a 25-31 record, scored 40 runs in its four tournament games, including 21 in a win and loss on Wednesday. The Toppers only run in the championship game came from a Gardner Richey home run in the top of the fourth inning.
