JACKSON – Ole Miss moved up two spots in the latest Associated Press Top 25 and the Rebels are closing in on their highest ranking in four decades.
The Rebels are sixth in the poll released Tuesday. They opened the 1970 season at No. 5 and rose to No. 4 by midseason before a loss to Southern Miss and Archie Manning’s broken arm sent them tumbling.
Ole Miss struggled early Sunday in the win over Memphis, but have a week off now to work out any problems.
Oklahoma State, a 24-13 winner over Georgia, jumped Ole Miss in the poll. There was room to move up after Oklahoma and Virginia Tech lost and Ohio State struggled with Navy.
The Rebels next play Southeastern Louisiana on Sept. 19.
