STARKVILLE — Mississippi State forward Jarvis Varnado has made the 12-man roster of the U.S. team that will compete in the World University Games later this year.

Varnado took part in tryouts in Colorado Springs, Colo. He’ll travel to Belgrade, Serbia, for the July 2-12 games. The final roster was decided Thursday by the USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team Committee chaired by Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim.

Wisconsin’s Bo Ryan is the U.S. coach. Twenty-four teams are expected to compete.

The 6-foot-9 Varnado led the Bulldogs with 12.9 points and 8.8 rebounds per game and led the nation with 170 blocks. He briefly entered his name in the NBA draft, but withdrew it a short time later.
