Wait is over: Prep football returns this week

The weekend’s jamborees to open the 2013 MHSAA football season presented more than two-quarter evaluations. The scrimmages offered challenges against opponents coaches didn’t know much about.

“Going against somebody that you hadn’t really worked on anything that they did, we were playing our base defense and trying to evaluate that,” Baldwyn coach Michael Gray said.
Baldwyn lost 28-7 to Senatobia in the Oxford Jamboree.

Preparation will ramp up this week, as teams prepare for a specific opponent – and for wins. The Bearcats open the regular season Friday against Nettleton.

North Pontotoc saw plenty of pop from its offense, not all of it from Louisiana-Monroe commit Marcus Green. Green scored a pair of exciting touchdowns, but quarterback Trey Jolly also threw a perfect 40-yard TD to Brooks Shannon. Green set it up with a 30-yard reception in traffic.

The Vikings also gave up some big plays – and 23 points – against Saltillo in a jamboree loss at Ole Miss. Class 2A North finalist Bruce hosts the Vikings, newly arrived in 3A, on Friday.

‘Big tradition’
The Trojans lost a lot of production, but don’t tell that to North Pontotoc coach Brian Sutton.

“They’re a great football team and they’ve got big tradition,” Sutton said. “I told our guys, ‘If you think next week is going to be a pushover, you’re bad wrong. They’re going to try to bust you in the mouth.’”

All games this season are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and there are plenty of interesting matchups to open the season, Shannon at Aberdeen and Lafayette at Tupelo among them.

The Journal’s Class 4A/3A rankings provide an early-season challenge as No. 1 Itawamba goes to No. 2 Ripley. Top large school Oxford hosts private school power Jackson Prep and No. 1 small school Calhoun City goes to Coffeeville.
