BALDWYN – Division 1-2A rivals Baldwyn and New Site played Friday with Prentiss County bragging rights on the line.
Behind the solid pitching of junior righthander Jorda Waters, the host Lady Bearcats exited the field in celebration after claiming a 9-1 victory in a six-inning, non-division county tournament quarterfinals game.
Baldwyn (13-4) plays Wheeler, a 4-0 winner against Jumpertown, at 1 p.m. today in the winner’s bracket.
New Site (11-4) played Jumpertown in a late loser’s bracket game Friday.
Waters, who didn’t know she was working in the circle until game time, struck out five and scattered four hits, all singles, during her six innings.
“I was proud of her,” Baldwyn coach Jessica Taylor said. “She throws hard and she hit her spots.”
Taylor has used three pitchers, including Waters, this season. The other two are Savannah Alexander and Shelby Blackwell.
“They’re all pretty much neck and neck,” Taylor said of her trio’s pitching talents. “It depends on who we’re playing as to who I pitch.”
Baldwyn’s bats gave Waters all the offensive cushion she would need with a four-hit, four-run first inning.
MacKenzie Riley, who went 3-for-3, started the hit parade with a triple. Maggie Marti and Kali Nanney had RBI singles. Two runs scored on a fielding error.
Haley Sandlin’s RBI single made it 5-0 lead in the second inning. Sandlin, Samantha Phillips and Waters later had RBIs.
Molly Walden and Shelby Stricklen singled in to score New Site’s only run.
