Weather pushes track to Monday

PEARL – A slow-moving weather system, which included lightning and heavy rain, was the winner in Saturday’s MHSAA state track and field meet.
Meet director Woody Barnett and MHSAA executive director Don Hinton decided to postpone the Class 2A-4A-6A portion of the meet at Pearl High School until noon on Monday because of the poor weather conditions.
Their decision came after a nearly 3-hour delay in the start of Saturday’s meet.
“We tried to ride it out,” said Todd Kelly, the MHSAA’s director of development. “We had lightning and a downpour just as warmups started for the pole vault (at 10 a.m.).”
The Class 1A-3A-5A meets were conducted on Friday. Oxford’s girls won the 5A state championship, their third straight, while Myrtle’s girls captured the 1A state title, the program’s second in three seasons.
Pontotoc’s girls team hopes to make program history Monday by winning its third straight state meet.
Amber Brinker, a senior, is top-seeded for the Lady Warriors in the 4A long jump while sophomore Katy McAuley is seeded No. 1 in the pole vault.
Also in the field events, Potts Camp’s Tenesha Woods is the top seed in the 2A long jump and triple jump. Corinth’s Jaynesia Johnson is the favorite in the 4A girls discus while Tupelo’s Antoinette Riddle is a co-favorite in the 5A girls triple jump.
In the boys pole vault, Pontotoc’s Blake Hill in 4A and Tupelo’s Ashton Huey in 5A are favored to finish in the top three.
On the track, distance runners from Pontotoc and Tupelo come in as the top seeds.
Pontotoc’s Locke Hester, an eighth grader, is favored in the 4A 3,200 meters. Tupelo’s Christina Daniels and Darnell Collier, both freshmen, are top seeds in the 3,200 meters.
In the 1,600 meters, Pontotoc sophomore Robin Shumaker is the top seed.
In the 800 and 1,600 meters, Tupelo senior Garrett Rogers is the top seed. He set the THS record in the 800 earlier this season.
Pontotoc’s Shaquille Gillard has the state’s top 4A clocking in the 110-meter hurdles.
