West Lauderdale wins Class 3A easily

JACKSON – Corinth tried its best to wear the glass slipper, but West Lauderdale wasn't reading Cinderella.

West Lauderdale swept Corinth Saturday in the Class 3A state championship series at Veterans Complex. The Lady Knights won the first game 15-5 and completed the sweep 14-4.

“They've got a great team and it showed,” head coach Janna LaBarreare said. “They hit the ball well and just don't make mistakes.”

Corinth (16-15) jumped out early in the first game, scoring three times in the first, but West Lauderdale came back nine runs in the second. The Lady Warriors tried to get back in it, but the Lady Knights kept pressure on, enforcing the 10-run rule in the fifth.

Catherine Simmons had three hits for Corinth, with Maggi Vondenstein adding two. Kayla Manus was the losing pitcher in both games.

In the second game, West Lauderdale kept its offense rolling taking a commanding 7-0 lead by the third inning. Corinth rallied in the third, scoring four runs, but wasn't able to get any closer. Simmons played well in the second game to, collecting three more hits. Kristi Hurley, Marley Whitaker and Amanda Hardwick had two hits each.

“Even though we didn't win I'm really proud of the girls,” LaBarreare said. “They played hard and we gave it our best shot.”
