West Union’s Lady Eagles are headed to the MHSAA Class 1A fastpitch championship series.
After Smithville evened the series on Monday with a 3-1 win, West Union won the closer 9-8 in an extra inning. West Union walked off on Bailey Bogue’s bases-loaded hit.
“It was a dogfight to the bitter end,” West Union coach Lisa Bogue said. “They’re not the defending champs for nothing.”
Smithville trailed by three in the seventh before Morgan Barrett’s
two-run double tied it and led 8-7 on Billie Claire Goode’s sac fly in the top of the eighth.
Julianna Garner tied it again in the bottom of the eighth.
LAST ONE: Tishomingo County was close to a state semifinal baseball series before Kosciusko ended that hope in a 7-6 win in Class 4A. It was the last game for long-time Braves coach Jerry Long.
The Braves (23-12) led 6-3 before the host Whippets scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth of Monday’s Game 3.
