With four of the league’s top 10 players – including a freshman who’s yet to take the court – is it any wonder Kentucky is a heavy favorite to win the SEC basketball title?
The Wildcats, who went 29-9 and reached the Final Four last season, got 18 of 23 first-place votes from SEC and national media voters in the preseason poll released on Monday
Vanderbilt earned four first-place votes and ranked second, followed by Florida, Alabama and Mississippi State.
Ole Miss was picked seventh.
MSU guard Dee Bost is one of three seniors on the All-SEC preseason team, joined by Alabama forward JaMychal Green and Vandy swingman Jeffery Taylor.
“It’s nice to recognized, but my focus is on what our team accomplishes,” said Bost, whose 450 career assists are 65 shy of the school record. “We have the talent to have a special year.”
The other first-teamers are Kentucky sophomore forward Terrence Jones – the preseason player of the year – and Vandy junior guard John Jenkins.
Three Kentucky players are on the second team – freshman forward Anthony Davis, sophomore guard Doron Lamb and senior Darius Miller.
The Wildcats were No. 2 in the preseason ESPN-USA Today coaches poll released last week. The AP media Top 25 will be released on Friday.
The SEC’s basketball media day is Thursday in Hoover, Ala. The regular season tips off on Friday, Nov. 11.
