OAKLAND NEWS

Did you hear about the baby bird that tried his first flight? His wings flapped but he was falling fast to his death. Just before he hit the ground mama bird grabbed him and carried him to safety. She said rest awhile and try again. You know we are like the baby bird when we try to do something. Sometimes we fall on our face. Jesus picks us up, straightens us out and says, rest awhile child then try again. He sure is a Savior, provider, caring and wonderful God. Sunday morning Bro. Terry Wilburn’s call to worship was Sanctuary. His special music was “Thank you Lord for your Blessings on Me.” Bro. Michael’s sermon preparation scripture came from Psalms 147. His sermon came from Romans 11:33 and was called “The Mission of the Church, His Glory.” God created us for his will and good pleasures and he must laugh out loud at our frustrations sometimes. If we trust and obey, our life will glorify him. If we do things our way we hurt him the Savior who died for us. Come let’s worship King Jesus. You are invited to worship at Oakland. Valentine’s Day the adults from Oakland met at Marty’s Restaurant in Corinth for a romantic celebration. The food was good and Russ and Inez Otten were elected King and Queen of the event. Sonny Newsom and Sue Brown were elected Mr. and Miss Cupid. Bro. Michael and Tonya had family there from Tennessee and Alabama and we were so proud to have them. S. A. and Billie Tapp were present and it was their 57th wedding anniversary. Bill and Kay Winter’s wedding anniversary was Feb. 11 and they were married 37 years. We celebrate d both anniversaries with them. The highlight of the evening was when Abbi Hopper sang a special song. Everyone seemed to enjoy the party. We send our love and get well wishes to our friend in Benton County Claudia Brown. Tom Presley, son of the late Tom Presley of Falkner sure needs our prayers at this time. He lives in North Carolina. Two hillbillies were talking and one man said I found a Roebuck book and they have some fine looking women in it and I think I’ll order one. The other man said, let me know and if it turns out to be good I’ll order one too. About two weeks passed and they met again. Did you get your woman the man asked his friend? No not yet, he replied but I reckon she’ll be here any day because her clothes have come already. Sonny and Mildred had lunch Sunday at Chapman’s Restaurant among friends. Johnny Eugene Shoffner’s birthday was last week and they had a birthday celebration with friends Sunday. We send our happy birthday wishes too. A woman had just returned to her home from an evening of church services when an intruder startled her. She caught the man in the act of robbing her home of its valuables and yelled ‘Stop! Acts 2:38!’ The burglar stopped in his tracks. The woman calmly called the police and explained what she had done. As the officer cuffed the man to take him in, he asked the burglar: “Why did you just stand there? All the old lady did was yell a scripture to you.” “Scripture?” replied the burglar. “She said she had an ax and two 38s!” Prayer list: Bryant and Alice Scott, Ruth Pendergrast, Faye Woods, Harold Owens, Michelle Tranum family, Ruth Martindale, Sonny Street, Ted and Rose Martindale, Sue Love, Nanette James, Ann and Billy Browns, S.
