Local high school players headed for AAU national championships

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Pine Grove Lady Panther Bryana Davis and Ripley Lady Tiger Shunquest Howell will be playing in the AAU National Championships after their AAU team, the Northeast Mississippi Lady Tigers, qualified by winning four games at the super regional tournament last weekend. Saturday, the team opened the tournament with a victory over the Arkansas Mavericks. In game two, Davis scored 10 points to help the Lady Tigers take an 83-82 overtime victory over the Arkansas Kamikaze. Davis, an eighth grader, started 27 games for Pine Grove High School and was voted Tippah County Freshman of the Year. Sunday, the Lady Tigers beat the Arkansas Swish 80-65 in the semifinals before winning the championship game 69-66 over the Memphis Elite. The 15 and under team is coached by Nathan Miller and features some of the areas best girls’ high school talent. Davis and Howell play along with all-area players such as Jasmine Spears of New Albany, Katie Garvin of Kossuth, and Aspriana Gilbert of Myrtle.
