RHS sends 15 to North Half track meet

RIPLEY — After a strong showing at last weekend’s regional track meet, the Ripley High School track team is one step away from defending their 2008 state track title. Today, 15 members of the team will compete in Oxford at the North Half track meet. Members that place in the top four will qualify to run at the state track meet in Pearl May 9. Phillip Laney coaches the RHS track team and said chances are good that the team will be represented at the state track meet. Laney based his assumptions on individual performances at their regional meet compared to results reported from other regionals. Leading the pack of probable state meet participants is 400-meter sprinter Lanesha Cox, who finished first at the regional with a time of 1:01.48. Cox also finished third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:40.31. Justin Terry finished third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.26. Just a freshman, Terry was one of the youngest winners at the regional meet. Distance runners Page Rowland and Riley Bennett each took third place in the 3200-meter run. According to Laney, Bennett is dealing with a lower leg injury, but he should be ready to go by race time. The boys’ 4×200-meter relay team of Timmie Hayes, Damone McDonald, Raye Peterson, and Anthony Storey finished in second place with a time of 1:35.34 and the 4×400-meter team of Riley Bennett, Jamal Gray, Timothy Hayes, and Raye Peterson finished in third place with a time of 3:49. The girls’ 4X400 team of Cox, Rowland, Tierra Graham, and Geordi Talley finished in second place with a time of 4:37. In field events, Michael McBryde finished in third place in boys’ shotput with a distance of 39’9″.
