Local area standouts participated in all-star games

BOONEVILE — Five Tippah County high school basketball players were among dozens of players selected to play in the Northeast Mississippi Basketball Coach’s Association’s All-Star game played May 30 at Northeast Mississippi Community College’s Bonner Arnold Coliseum. Ripley’s Tyrie Berry scored 12 points for the West, as they squeaked out a 66-64 victory over the East in the 3A/4A/5A boys’ game. Berry’s counterpart, former 3A rival Labrandon Scruggs of Corinth, led the East squad with 14 points. Pine Grove Lady Panther Amber Johnson and Alecia Bellew were selected to the East squad for the 1A/2A girls’ game. Johnson scored 13 points to lead the East, who fell to the West, 83-48. In the process, Johnson tied the record for most three-pointers in the all-star clash, sinking three on the afternoon. Pine Grove’s Dylan Hill and Jeremy Mauney played for the East in the 1A/2A boys’ game. Hill scored 10 points for the East who lost to the West squad, 103-68. The teams are broken into East and West squads based on where the school falls in proximity to Hwy. 45. Only high school seniors can play in the game and adjustments are made according to the number of schools represented.
