BMC Lady Toppers in NAIA academic top 10 for third straight year

For the third consecutive year, Blue Mountain College has landed in the academic top 10 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics programs as recognized by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. The Lady Toppers, who compiled a 3.524 grade point during the 2008-09 season, finished eighth in the nation. BMC competes in the TranSouth Athletic Conference and is the only league team ranked among the top 25. The Lady Toppers are the only Mississippi team to be ranked in the top 25 in all of the divisions of the NCAA, NAIA and community and junior colleges. “Any time young people apply themselves and achieve the highest standards of academics plus compete in a tough athletics conference like the TranSouth, a coach as to be very pleased,” said Lavon Driskell, women’s basketball coach and BMC director of athletics. “To achieve this three years in a row says a lot about the type of student-athletes we have at BMC,” he says, “and it is proof that they have their priorities straight.” Three Lady Toppers – Kristen Coleman of Carrollton, Ashley Hale of New Albany and Katelynn Wright of Oxford – were named to the BMC President’s List with 4.0 GPAs for the Spring ’09 semester. Four players – Shayla Stroud of Booneville, Kala Morris and Jordan McCormick of Pontotoc, and Lauren Burgess of Water Valley – were named to the Dean’s List. All seven were named TranSouth Scholar Athletes earlier this year. “Blue Mountain College congratulates Coach Driskell and the Women’s Basketball players for earning this recognition as winners in the 2008-09 Academic Top 10 Team Honor Roll,” said BMC president Dr. Bettye Rogers Coward. “High academic performance among athletes is a reflection of the institution’s commitment to academic excellence.” The academic top 10 NAIA teams and their GPAs: 1.
