Teens injured in ATV wreck

RIPLEY – Last Friday, Walnut First Responders were dispatched to offer assistance to Three Forks First Responders at the scene of an ATV wreck on CR 301 in Walnut. The wreck occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. and involved two young males believed to be between 15-16 years old, according to Walnut Fire Chief J.J. Mathis. “The driver of the ATV tried to avoid hitting a dog, but struck it anyway,” said Mathis, “and that caused them to wreck.” Mathis said the young men were thrown from the ATV, with the passenger sustaining the most injuries. He was transported by the Tippah County Ambulance Service to the Walnut Fire Department Helipad and airlifted to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo by Corinth Air-Evac #58. “Because of the nature of the call and unknown injuries, we felt that an air evacuation was necessary,” added Mathis. “He had cuts and bruises but we were unsure of internal injuries.” The driver was taken by personal vehicle to the Tippah County Hospital and later released. The condition of the passenger was unknown as of Thursday morning, but he had been released from the hospital.
