Billy Gonzales, a former Florida and Illinois assistant, will be hired as wide receivers coach for Mississippi State, according to multiple reports Tuesday.
Gonzales coached with Mullen for eight years (2001-08) at Bowling Green, Utah and Florida, as the pair followed Urban Meyer from stop to stop. Gonzales has coached receivers for most of his 19-year career, and he also served as co-offensive coordinator at Illinois his one year there.
The Gonzales hire means Tim Brewster, who coached MSU’s receivers last season, will be moved to tight ends coach, a more familiar role for him. Scott Sallach, who’s coached tight ends since 2009, will likely move into an administrative role.
Things didn’t go so well for Gonazles at Illinois, as the team went 2-10 in head coach Tim Beckman’s first season. Chris Beatty, with whom Gonzales shared offensive coordinator duties, was fired following the season.
Gonzales has also coached at LSU (2010-11), Kent State (1995-2000) and MacMurray College (1994).
