Voters in Senate District 16 on Tuesday appeared to have elected Angela Lairy as a successor to Sen. Bennie Turner of West Point, who died in November.

Angela Turner Lairy and Kenny Fowler, both of West Point, were on the non-party special election ballot. Lairy, an attorney, is Turner’s daughter. Fowler is a businessman.

Lairy had 4,143 votes, or 71 percent, while Kenny Fowler had 1,705 votes, or 29 percent

Senate District 16 includes Clay as well as parts of Lowndes, Noxubee and Oktibbeha counties.

In Noxubee and Oktibbeha counties, affidavit and absentee ballots were still left to count Tuesday night.
