Hamilton man in custody after chase across state lines

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the apprehension of local man following Tuesday morning high speed chase that crossed the state line.

According to a statement from the MCSO, charges are pending for James Newton Hughes, 28, of Hamilton. On Tuesday at 9:27 a.m., the MCSO assisted in a pursuit of a subject and located him after he fled on foot from his vehicle and wandered into a yard at a residence on Wolfe Road.

Lamar County, Ala. has charges currently pending on Hughes at this time. Hughes also is currently on probation with the Mississippi Department of Corrections. Deputies were able to take Hughes into custody without incident.

Currently he has an investigative hold with Lamar County, Ala., and he has a hold by MDOC. Hughes is currently being housed at Monroe County Detention Center.
