The National Weather service says a man was hit by lightning near Tuscumbia about 10:30 p.m. Sunday and died. Emergency management says the man was working on a barge when he was struck.
What appears to be tornado damage is being reported along a line from Cullman to DeKalb County, but there's no confirmation of a twister. Forecasters say numerous buildings have roof and window damage in Cullman, and a wall collapsed at a furniture store.
Damage is being reported from Baldwin County on the coast all the way north to the Tennessee Valley. Thousands of people are without power around Birmingham, and trees are blocking roads.
Strong storms and rain moved through Northeast Mississippi Sunday night. Monroe County had a tornado warning issued around 1 a.m. No tornado was reported, but wind damage was reported around Hamilton.
