Soldier laid to rest in Waynesboro

WAYNESBORO — More than 200 people paid their last respects to a fallen Waynesboro soldier killed in Afghanistan.

Thirty-year-old Sgt. Eric C. Newman, died Oct. 14 in a bombing in Afghanistan. After serving in Iraq, Newman went to Afghanistan with the 1st Squadron, 38th Calvary Regiment. based in Fort Bragg, N.C.

The Leader-Call reported that at Saturday's ceremony, one of Newman's former commanding officers, Bob Ashley, spoke about Newman’s commitment to his country. Ashley said Newman had a "direct role" in U.S. successes in Iraq.
