From its inception in 1971, the Tupelo Symphony Orchestra has relied on professional musicians.

TSO's founder, the late Wade Lagrone, believed that strategy would set a benchmark for quality. TSO draws orchestra members from throughout Mississippi and the Southeast, in addition to talented guest artists from around the world.

Led by Steven Byess, the symphony has employed a number of distinguished conductors, Arthur Kreutz, Kurt Klipstatter, Eric Knight and Louis Lane.

In 1997, the symphony made an alliance with the Cliburn Foundation, and numerous winners of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition have performed in town.

Byess started a yearly series of children's programs to introduce students to orchestral music. The symphony also has taken shows to Amory, Fulton and New Albany.

Truly Tupelo appears every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday in 2010 as part of the 140th anniversary of both the city and the Daily Journal.
