Brewer, 32, had an initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Oxford where he was charged with depriving rights under color of law, said Corinth Chief David Lancaster.
His arraignment in Oxford is set for 10 a.m. Monday.
The charges were filed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation resulting from an investigation ordered by Lancaster after he received a complaint on Sept. 17 that Brewer had taken money from a Hispanic man during an arrest.
Lancaster placed Brewer on administrative leave without pay while the investigation was under way, and that status continues.
Brewer was released on a $5,000 unsecured bond.
