RIPLEY - Authorities have identified a body found by hunters Saturday afternoon near Hell Creek Wildlife Management Area in Blue Mountain.

Tippah County authorities said Tuesday morning the victim is David Lee Floyd, 58, of Shannon. Police determined his identity through fingerprints on file with police.

"He had some previous charges in another county 10 or 15 years ago. He's also been in and out of the Lee County jail on misdemeanor charges as recently as this year," according to Tippah County Investigator Jason Willis.

Floyd's severely beaten body was taken to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Pearl for autopsy. Authorities hope to have the cause of death by the end of the week.

Willis said the State Medical Examiner's office notified the Tippah County Sheriff's Department of the fingerprint match about 3:30 p.m. Monday. The department withheld releasing the name, pending notification of next of kin.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the Tippah County Sheriff's Department are investigating the death. Anyone with information should contact the Tippah County Sheriff's Department at (662) 837-9336.
