AMORY - Major League Baseball rookie first baseman Mitch Moreland is coming home to Amory after a whirlwind first season in the majors.

The Amory High School and Mississippi State University graduate was called up by the Texas Rangers in July and found himself thrust into the limelight of national television and professional sports as his team made it to the World Series playing against the San Francisco Giants. Throughout the playoffs and series, Moreland turned in a stellar performance, registering one of the highest batting averages on his team and turning in a solid performance at first base.

His hometown wants to pay tribute to their first MLB star by hosting a Mitch Moreland Day on Monday, December 6, at 3:30 p.m. in Frisco Park. The public is asked to be there about 3 p.m. to set up their lawn chairs and get ready for Moreland's arrival.

According to one of the event's organizers, Judy Tyree, this will be a time when people can show their support for Moreland's accomplishments. "We want it to just be a really fun day," Tyree said.
