Sidney Gay Ash Pipkin was born March 23, 1921, in Marshall County to James Guy Ash and Birdie Simmons Ash. She departed this life on Dec. 25, 2010, at the age of 89 years, nine months and two days.
She married Jimmy Lee Pipkin on Sept. 12, 1936. To this union, five children, 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren were born. Her husband, J.L. Pipkin was called into the ministry in 1945, and he was ordained as a licensed minister with the Church of The Lord Jesus Christ in June, 1946. This husband and wife team established and helped establish several churches in the North Mississippi area. They founded Blue Mountain Church of The Lord Jesus Christ in Nov, 1948. She was a faithful member of the assembly at the time of her death.
Survivors include one son, Jimmy Pipkin and wife, Virginia of Hickory Flat; and two daughters, Carolyn Schmidt and husband, Al of Olive Branch and Volene Taylor of Blue Mountain; one sister, Christine Hatchett and husband, Hugh of Waterford.
She is also survived by half siblings, Gene Ash, Ricky Ash, Lonnie Ash, Henry Ash, Danny Ash, Jackie Ash, Mike Ash, Bonnie Ash and Sue Bolden.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two daughters, Shelia Bingham and Marilyn Pulse; and two grandsons, Lee Bingham and Jon Bingham.
She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Stanley Fesmire, Irene Lawrence, Charlene McGill; four brothers, Wilifred Ash, James Guy Ash Jr., Russell Ash and Charles Ash; and a host of other precious relatives.
Sis. Pipkin, as most everyone fondly referred to her, was the ideal pastor’s wife. She always worked “behind the scenes” to assure everything was running smoothly...she was never one to seek recognition. Not only was she loved by her church family, she also touched the lives of most everyone in the community in so many ways.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Blue Mountain Church of The Lord Jesus Christ with Bro. Joe McKnight, Bro. Carl Lawson, Bro. Don Johnson and Bro. Steve Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
TUPELO – Joe Westmoreland, 74, went to be with the Lord Friday, Dec. 24, 2010, at his home in Tupelo after a long illness. He was born March 10, 1936, in Pontotoc to Joe and Lorene Westmoreland. Earlier in his life, he was an instructor in refrigeration at Itawamba Junior College and had also worked a number of years as service manager with Dr. Pepper Bottling Co. in Tupelo. He was a remote control enthusiast. He loved flying his Cesna 172 airplane and spending time with his family. He and his wife enjoyed sqaure dancing, ballroom dancing and round dancing. He was owner of Westlareland Glass Company and a member of Priceville Baptist Church.
Services will be 11 a.m. today at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Dr. Robbie Howard officiating. A private graveside service will be in Union Cemetery, South of Plantersville.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Betty Jo Westmoreland of Tupelo; two sons, Kenneth Westmoreland of Plantersville and Eric “Echo” Westmoreland and wife, Dale of Burnsville; a daughter, Denise Du Bois and husband, Paul of Tupelo; and a daughter-in-law, Pam Westmoreland of Pascagoula; a sister, Mae Johnson and husband, Douglas of Mt. Dora, Fla.; his grandchildren, Jonathan and Marcus Westmoreland, Carrie Fouthman and husband, Bryan, Kayla Haley and husband, Johnathan, Candy and Melanie Westmoreland, Cory Du Bois and wife, Jenny, Elizabeth and Megan Du Bois, Sean Westmoreland and wife, Crystal and Chad Westmoreland and wife, Jill; and 12 great-grandchildren.

SHANNON - Gracie "Sissy" Beatrice Felkins Blakeney, 83, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. She was born June 19, 1927, in the Old Union Community to Walter Benson and David Ella Waycaster Felkins. She worked for many years at National Trust Life Insurance Company in Memphis. She and her husband, Buster, retired in Pickwick until his death. She enjoyed gardening, mowing her yard, drinking coffee at Griggs Grocery and Nonie's Truck Stop and visiting her friends at the Renasant Bank in Shannon. She loved taking care and spending time with her dog, Tadpole.
Private family services are scheduled for a later date. Mrs. Blakeney and her husband's final wishes were to be returned to the Tennessee River, a special place where they loved to spend time together. Lee Memorial Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her sister, Martha Carnathan of Nettleton; her brother, Sonny Felkins (Marilyn) of Atlanta, Texas; a special nephew and her caretaker, Buddy and his wife, Cindy Jones of Shannon; and numerous nephews, nieces, great-nieces and great-nephews, who loved her very much.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Oliver Lee "Buster" Blakeney; two sisters, Ruth Jones and Ruby Colbert; a niece, Sonya Felkins; a great-nephew, Michael Ray Carnathan; and her parents.

MANTACHIE - Herbert J. Smith, 81, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010, at Countrywood Plantation in Mantachie. A native of Farmington, Iowa, Mr. Smith had lived in Amory from 1990 until moving to Mantachie in 2002. He was of the Methodist faith and enjoyed traveling. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps.
A funeral service will be held later in the week at Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka, Mo. Local arrangements for the Smith family are in the care of E.E. Pickle Funeral Home of Amory.
He is survived by two stepsons, Thomas (Hattie Mae) Rossi of Amory and Roger L. (Deloris) Rossi of Arizona; a sister; two brothers; 11 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Arveda Febea Forquer Smith on Sept. 25, 2003.

BYHALIA - Rena Pitts Brooks, 77, died Friday, Dec. 24, 2010, at her daughter's home in Byhalia. Mrs. Brooks was a graduate of Adamsville High School. She was a lifelong Christian, being baptized in the Milledgeville Methodist Church and attending the Rugby Hills Baptist Church while living in Memphis. She was a generous supporter of many Christian organizations. She loved reading her Bible daily and sharing her testimony with others.

FULTON - Mary Lou Smith, 90, died Dec. 25, 2010. She was born May 3, 1920. She leaves behind her husband of 67 years, Hilton Caydo Smith. She was a devoted wife and loving mother. She loved gardening and working with her flowers.

MYRTLE - Alma Lorene Jarrett Sides, 78, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010, at her home. She was born April 25, 1932, in Union County to J.T. Jarrett and Ruby Bingham. She was a retired employee with Gilbert's Home Health. She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church.

VARDAMAN - Howard Wilson Morgan, 71, died Dec. 24, 2010, at Trace Regional Hospital in Houston. He was born Nov. 11, 1939, in Calhoun County. He was Calhoun County District Five Supervisor for over 27 years. He was a member of New Liberty Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, a member of the Community Board of Directors with Bancorp South Vardaman Branch, a member of the Mississippi State Supervisors Assn. and a member of the Three Rivers Planning and Development. He was an avid deer hunter.

GUNTOWN - Morris E. Agnew 98, died Dec. 26, 2010, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo after a brief illness. He was born June 22, 1912, to J. Bonds and Bessie Lee Epting Agnew. He was a retired dairy farmer. He was known for his advanced farming methods. He was very active in the Cedar Hill Community for many years. He was a lifelong member of Bethany Associate Reform Presbyterian Church, where he was the oldest member and an active ruling Elder.
