TUPELO - For the second time in less than a week, a bicyclist has been hit by a vehicle in Tupelo.

Tuesday morning a man crossing the intersection of West Main and Thomas Street on his bike was struck by a vehicle. He was taken to the northeast Mississippi Medical Center and treated for minor injuries.

The man who hit the cyclist was on the scene when police arrived. He was not arrested. Lt. Tim Clouse said the incident was an unfortunate accident.

Neither the driver nor the cyclist was identified.

Tupelo officials have made an effort to place bike lanes throughout the city for the safety of cyclists. There is a bike lane on a portion of Thomas Street, but none near where the accident occurred, according to Renee Ray, senior city planner for Tupelo. Ray is in charge of the city's bike plan.

Because the accident happened when the cyclist was crossing the intersection, it is unclear if a bike lane would have helped prevent the accident since the lanes don't extend across intersections.

Ray said the city has plans for more bike lanes in Tupelo, but those plans have not been approved by the City Council.

Tuesday's accident came six days after a cyclist was struck by a passing vehicle on the Natchez Trace Parkway near Tupelo High School.

Rob Bowers, a high school principal in Kentucky, suffered a broken collarbone, a concussion, compressed vertebrae and a sprained ankle in the accident. He was released from the hospital over the weekend.

Authorities are looking for a dark burgundy Ford F-150 with damage to the passenger side front fender and door. This vehicle is suspected to have been involved in the hit and run.
