JACKSON – A former employee at a privately run youth prison in Mississippi says many inmates were denied access to an education because they were often placed on lockdown for days, if not weeks, at a time.

George Cole, who was a principal at the Walnut Grove Youth Correctional Facility from 2005 to 2009, told a House committee Tuesday he also saw evidence of physical abuse of inmates.

The U.S. Justice Department is investigating the facility. The Southern Poverty Law Center filed a lawsuit in federal court in November, claiming guards beat inmates, smuggled drugs to the youth and engaged in sexual acts with them.
