TUPELO - In a warehouse off Mattox Street in Tupelo are more than 23,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies, waiting to be sold and eaten.

Girl Scout cookies arrived early Monday morning, and troop leaders stopped by throughout the day to load their trucks and SUVs with case upon case of cookies.

The shipment contained 1,987 cases, with 12 boxes per case, and this delivery is just for Lee County troops. Troops in other counties received similar shipments.

"Sales begin this weekend," said Jenny Jones, director of marketing and communications for Girl Scouts Heart of the South, the council that includes Northeast Mississippi troops.

The cookies will be on sale only through March 6.

"Short and sweet," Jones said.

Mayor Jack Reed Jr. is an honorary cookie chairman for this year's sale, and he stopped by the warehouse to take a look at the sweet treats.

"Our community has always supported our youth," he said. "This is fundamental to the Girl Scouts. If you think Girl Scouts are important, buy some cookies."

The cookie sales are a vital part of the Girl Scout experience, Jones said. Not only does the sale teach the Scouts business lessons, the money raised goes to fund almost all of the Scouts' programs.

Scouts will be selling all eight flavors: Trefoils, Samoas, Thank U Berry Munch, Tagalongs, Do-Si-Dos, Thin Mints, Lemon Chalet Cremes and Dulce de Leche. Nationally, Thin Mints are the most popular brand, but in the South, Samoas sell the best, followed by Thin Mints.

Cookies are $3.50 per box.

Booth locations around Tupelo include the Girl Scout office at the Link Centre, The Mall at Barnes Crossing, West Main Kroger, Shoe Carnival and West Main Walmart.
