GULFPORT - Former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott announced Tuesday his endorsement for state Sen. Billy Hewes for lieutenant governor.

"When you look at Billy Hewes' experience and record of accomplishments," Lott said, "it's clear to me that he is the most prepared and qualified candidate to be our next lieutenant governor.

"I know how important it is to have people with proven experience in leadership positions," Lott said. "Clearly, Billy Hewes has the most relevant, firsthand experience having served in the Mississippi Senate as president pro tempore, and that's why I'm pleased to support his campaign."

Hewes of Gulfport will meet State Treasurer Tate Reeves of Jackson in the Republican primary Aug. 2.
