Division 1-4A: Downing's barrage lifts Lady Warriors

FULTON - Katherine Downing connected on four second-half threes to help lift Pontotoc past Itawamba AHS 55-47 in the girls semifinals of the Region 1-4A tournament at Itawamba Community College on Friday.

Downing's fifth and final three-pointer came at the 2:35 mark to give Pontotoc a 49-47 lead.

The Lady Warriors went 4 of 4 from the free-throw line down the stretch to advance to tonight's championship game. Downing paced Pontotoc with 18, 15 coming in the second half, while Quay Dunn scored a game-high 21 for Itawamba AHS.

No. 2 seed Pontotoc will take on No. 1 seed New Albany in the girls championship game at 7 p.m.

No. 1 seed New Albany will play No. 3 seed Shannon for the boys championship at 8:30 p.m.

No. 3 seed Itawamba AHS will take on No. 4 seed Tishomingo County in the girls consolation game at 4 and Pontotoc and North Pontotoc will play at 5:30 in the boys consolation game.

- (G) New Albany 66, Tishomingo County 56: New Albany opened the second half on a 10-0 run after trailing 26-24 at halftime.

Micha Washington scored 24 for New Albany and Deidra McCoy had 16 for Tishomingo County.

- (B) New Albany 87, North Pontotoc 53: Tadarious Coburn scored a game-high 15 and five other players scored in double digits as New Albany pressed its way to the boys championship game.

D.J. Mayfield led the Vikings with 10 points.

- (B) Shannon 84, Pontotoc 75: Javon Green scored a game-high 28 points to help Shannon advance to the boys championship game.

Rashad Dixon paced the Warriors with 20 points.
