SALTILLO – A large fire at a salvage yard destroyed several vehicles, but no one was injured.

Tupelo Fire Department received a call for a grass fire at 3246 Highway 145, just north of the Mall at Barnes Crossing, at about 3 p.m.

The fire quickly spread to the salvage vehicles, as well as to the many rubber tires and freon cans in the area, said Captain David Riley.

Saltillo and Guntown fire departments backed up Tupelo in fighting the blaze, because there were no fire hydrants in the area.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

Much of the fire was put out in about an hour’s time.

Riley estimated that about six vehicles were destroyed in the blaze.
