While the global downturn forced the Japanese automaker to announce in December 2008 it was delaying the opening of the plant indefinitely, Toyota last June said it was resuming operations and planning to open the plant later this year.
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Mississippi will assemble the popular Corolla, the world's best-selling car with more than 33 million sold worldwide.
TMMMS isn't having a birthday party, however. There's much work to be done to get it ready.
"Everyone here is extremely busy preparing for the fall launch of the Corolla in Blue Springs," said TMMMS Vice President of Administration David Copenhaver. "Our Toyota team is growing rapidly, now with over 400 team members, and our process equipment installation progresses daily."
More than 30,200 people have applied for the 2,000 jobs at the plant. Applications have come from 81 of the state's 82 counties, 34 states, plus Puerto Rico and the U.S. Armed Forces in either Europe, Canada, the Middle East or Africa.
