NEW ALBANY – A suspected rapist is in the Union County Jail on $750,000 bond in connection with a Feb. 19 incident involving a 19-year-old woman.

New Albany Police Detective Chris Robertson said George W. Gowan, 43, is charged with attempted armed robbery, attempted rape, kidnapping and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Gowan’s arrested stemmed from an incident on Feb. 19 when a man was found by police dragging a woman behind a building in an attempt to rape and rob her, according to Robertson. Police chased the suspect, but he escaped.

On Feb. 25, agents from the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force contacted New Albany Police about a suspect they’d arrested that was wanted in connection with two rapes in Collins, Miss. After an investigation, Gowan was charged with the New Albany incident.

Gowan remains in jail.
