TUPELO – Tupelo Middle School, Pierce Street Elementary and the Fillmore Center were placed on partial lockdowns for about 35 minutes on Friday at the recommendation of the Tupelo Police Department.

The department initiated the lockdowns after receiving a report that someone had heard gunshots on Ida Street. That report could not be confirmed, and the lockdown lasted from 11:45 a.m. until 12:20 p.m.

In a partial lockdown, all students are brought inside the building and the doors are locked, but students are still allowed to be outside of classrooms. During a full lockdown, students are locked inside classrooms.

A school district statement thanked the Tupelo Police Department for its “vigilance in protecting the safety and welfare of our students.”

The lockdown followed standard district procedure.
