“Paws in the Park” at Ballard Park is a senior project for Kendal Wallace and Mandi Hankins.
“It’s an afternoon in the park where you can come and walk one of the dogs that needs to be adopted, especially if you’re interested in adoption,” Wallace said. “We’re trying to raise awareness for the Humane Society.”
About 10 dogs will be available for walking. Humane Society representatives and volunteers will be on hand to help with the dogs and any adoption paperwork.
Hankins said she and Wallace share an interest in pets.
“My heart has always been with animals,” she said. “I love them and I feel bad for the ones at the shelter. I’m trying to do what I can to help them. They need a lot of help.”
Wallace wants more people to think about the shelter when searching for a new pet.
“A lot of times when people are looking for a new dog for their family, they say, ‘Oh, we want a puppy’,” she said. “They don’t really think about going to the Humane Society. There’s a really big number of animals that get put down every year. It’s really sad.”
“Paws in the Park” will include T-shirt sales, face painting, a bake sale, raffles and prizes. All proceeds and donations go to the Humane Society.
