JACKSON - Gov. Haley Barbour has signed a bill to create an 8-year driver's license that would cost $40.

The new law will take effect Oct. 1.

The bill also would create an 8-year license for motorcyclists at a cost of $22.

State driver's licenses currently are good for four years at a cost of $21, while motorcycle endorsements — which are added to the regular driver's licenses — cost an extra $6.

Original motorcycle licenses and renewals cost $14, according to the state Department of Public Safety.

The bill is House Bill 606.
